After purchasing these beauties in a juvenile state from award-winning Fleming’s Nurseries in Melbourne, they have been grown and nurtured at Winwood Advanced Tree nursery in Gordon, Victoria.

FOLIAGE

Lustrous, dark green leaves with five to seven deep, fine lobes. Deep red to bronze in late autumn, with an even more brilliant scarlet colour in cooler areas. Leaves often persist over winter.

CULTURE

Very adaptable to a wide range of site conditions, including both wet and dry, clay or sandy soils. Handles moderate drought, air pollution and has good wind tolerance. Best in moist, well-drained, acid soils but may suffer iron induced chlorosis in soils with a high pH. Prefers full sun. Has a shallow, fibrous root system when mature. Lower branches may require pruning for vehicular or pedestrian access.

FLOWERS

Grey-green to tan male catkins; yellow-green to tan female flowers mature to light brown acorns. Blooms in late winter to early spring.

Stout acorns around 12mm long with a shallow, saucer-shaped cap.
